I’m not sure how to explain to you the things I’ve learned about God’s love for us with regard to the food we eat. I am not eloquent enough to explain the way Heavenly Father has explained this to me. The only thing I can […]

When you first get your start, use it to make pancakes, waffles and other quick breads for a couple of weeks. It takes about that long for the start to get use to it’s new environment and become stable. This is especially true when you […]
The Word of Wisdom D&C:89, is in my opinion, the Holy Grail of Mormonism. It is mysterious, puzzling, cryptic and when you add the world’s view, completely indecipherable. But the blessings! Wow!
See what I’m saying?
That is why, our family decided to truly study these verses of scripture and eat accordingly. We began by cutting down on the meat in our diet. This was difficult for all of us, particularly Derek, the Dad in our family, since he grew up on a ranch eating meat and potatoes. First, we tried to making meat substitutes. We made wheat meat, bean burgers, mushroom dishes, & soybean patties. Honestly, we found the soy patties and soy meat to be the very best tasting and had the best texture. Still in the end, we settled for lentils as a general meat substitute because of ease of use and the controversy with regard to GMO and Soy. Lentils take on the flavor of anything you add to them. The difficult thing about eating less meat was that we previously revolved all our recipes around what meat we were using. So we really had to switch to using vegetables, grains or nuts as our main ingredient. Planning the meals really helped.
Next, we got to the “Wheat for man..” part. This was our biggest challenge. There is so much controversy over wheat and why it “isn’t good” for us and then we read the word of wisdom and didn’t know how to apply this part into our lives. I prayed a lot. I found some ideas on how to incorporate wheat into cereal and how to sprout it to make Ezekiel Bread and Sprouted Wheat Bread but I truly struggled. My prayer was answered one day when I walked into a local food storage store. I was looking for mixed grains for cereals and sprouts. There was someone speaking about the benefits of sourdough, I sat down and listened. It was a year before I could get my hands on the start and try it myself and another three years to figure it out enough to make breads my family would eat.
Now, we are in a place where we revolve our meals around the naturally leavened bread we will be eating with it, whether it be homemade pasta, pie crust, pizza or sandwich loaf-the list goes on. Our food bill has dropped and we are a lot more healthy. We have not had the stomach flu in over five years. We have enjoyed a better understanding of the scriptures and received answers to many questions we have had over the years. We have truly been blessed with knowledge and with good health.
Stay tuned for many posts about our journey over the last few years, recipes and ideas for helping us all to discover the blessings of living the Word of Wisdom.
